Summer Experiment 2024

The Aviation Weather Center will host the 2024 Aviation Weather Testbed Spring Experiment on June 25th through June 27th, 2024.

The experiment kickoff is Tuesday, June 25th at 8:30 am with coffee and introductions. Daily activities will run until around 4:30 pm each day.

Warn on Forecast System (WoFS) Evaluation

In collaboration with the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), the AWT conducted an initial evaluation of the utility of WoFS during the 2022 AWT Summer Experiment, focusing at that time on AWC operations through Traffic Flow Management Convective Forecast (TCF) forecasts. For this experiment, NSSL and AWT are expanding the scope to include IDSS and collaborative opportunities for both AWC and CWSU operations. This experiment will serve as an in person kickoff to a longer term assessment of WoFS at AWC and CWSUs which will last through the summer, led by NSSL and the AWT.

Outlook Graphics Beyond Day One

Another component to evolving AWC’s products and services is providing additional planning information for our general aviation (GA) customers. Current AWC products for GA sensitive hazards like icing and turbulence do not extend beyond the 24 hour time frame. Therefore a need exists to not only provide this information in the extended range, but to present it in a way non-weather savvy users can easily interpret. Recent AWT Experiments have explored the creation of an Outlook Graphic as well as the utilization of non-deterministic information for communicating hazards in the extended range to the GA community. This experiment will continue to explore the utility and creation of such graphics.
