Spring Experiment 2024

The Aviation Weather Center will host the 2024 Aviation Weather Testbed Spring Experiment on April 2nd through April 4th, 2024.

The experiment kickoff is Tuesday, April 2nd at 8:30 am with coffee and introductions. Daily activities will run until around 4:30 pm each day.

Activities

Rapid Refresh Forecast System Evaluation

The RRFS is currently slated to become operational in early 2025, including updated versions of post processed icing and turbulence guidance algorithms, the Forecast Icing Potential (FIP) and Graphical Turbulence Guidance (GTG). The RRFS implementation will allow for the eventual retirement of current operational regional/high resolution modeling systems (NAM, RAP, HRRR, SREF, HREF). For this experiment, participants will have the opportunity to take part in creating experimental G-AIRMETs using RRFS based guidance in order to help assess the utility of updated post processed algorithms, and the impact of retirement of legacy modeling systems.

Enhance collaboration between AWC and Core partners

The Aviation Weather Center is continually working toward evolving their products and services to better meet the needs of its partners. With this evolution comes the need for better collaboration and communication on expected aviation hazards to ensure a consistent aviation forecast across the National Weather Service. This experiment will explore the utility of a National Aviation Operations Center (NAOC) desk deployed within operations at AWC, and evaluate the best methods for enhanced collaboration among partners.
